Estimation Methodology & Data Architecture
Our calculation engine is built on transparent, reproducible mathematics. Here is how our model calculates rate spreads and risk factor coefficients.
Illustrative Model Note: The rates produced by this calculator are simulated estimates based on statistical weightings and state baseline benchmarks. Insurers evaluate proprietary algorithms, territory zip codes, vehicle telemetry, credit history (where legal), and loss ratios when quoting actual policies.
The Core Calculation Equation
Every estimate begins with an empirical state base rate and evaluates individual driver inputs using a series of multiplicative coefficients:
Upper Range = Round5( Midpoint × 1.14 )
Documented Factor Coefficients
1. Driver Age Coefficients
Reflects the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) fatal crash involvements per 100,000 licensed drivers.
| Age Cohort | Multiplier | Actuarial Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| 16-19 years | 2.35x | High risk per vehicle mile |
| 20-24 years | 1.55x | High risk per vehicle mile |
| 25-34 years | 1.05x | Standard baseline loss tier |
| 35-49 years | 0.92x | Prime demographic lowest claim frequency |
| 50-64 years | 0.90x | Prime demographic lowest claim frequency |
| 65+ years | 1.08x | Standard baseline loss tier |
2. Driving History & Infraction Multipliers
| Variable | Options | Impact on Base |
|---|---|---|
| At-Fault Accidents | 0 / 1 / 2+ | 1.00x (Clean) • 1.35x (+35%) • 1.85x (+85%) |
| Moving Violations | 0 / 1 / 2+ | 1.00x (Clean) • 1.22x (+22%) • 1.58x (+58%) |
| Insurance Claims | 0 / 1 / 2+ | 1.00x (None) • 1.15x (+15%) • 1.42x (+42%) |
| Years Licensed | <1 / 1–3 / 4–9 / 10+ | 1.25x • 1.12x • 1.00x • 0.92x (-8%) |
3. Vehicle Classification Factors
| Vehicle Class | Multiplier | Repair & Safety Driver |
|---|---|---|
| Sedan | 1.00x | Standard consumer vehicle repair benchmarks |
| SUV | 0.95x | Family passenger demographics and strong structural crash protection |
| Truck | 1.04x | Standard consumer vehicle repair benchmarks |
| Coupe | 1.18x | Standard consumer vehicle repair benchmarks |
| Van | 0.92x | Family passenger demographics and strong structural crash protection |
| Luxury | 1.38x | High OEM part replacement and specialized labor rates |
| Electric | 1.22x | High battery replacement expense and specialized body shops |
| Other | 1.05x | Standard consumer vehicle repair benchmarks |
4. Deductible Sensitivity Schedule
Shows how increasing your collision/comprehensive deductible reduces monthly premiums.
| Deductible | Factor | Relative Impact |
|---|---|---|
| $250 | 1.14x | Costs ~14% more due to lower insurer deductible absorption |
| $500 | 1.00x | Standard industry reference baseline |
| $1000 | 0.88x | Saves ~12% on physical damage portion |
| $1500 | 0.81x | Saves ~19% on physical damage portion |
| $2000 | 0.74x | Saves ~26% on physical damage portion |
Public Data Sources & Baseline Calibration
Our state baseline rate tables are synthesized from publicly available regulatory filings and statistical insurance registries, including:
- NAIC (National Association of Insurance Commissioners): Auto Insurance Database Reports & Homeowners Insurance Aggregate Filings.
- State Departments of Insurance (DOI): Mandatory auto limits, no-fault frameworks, and property hazard filings.
- Society of Actuaries (SOA): Valuation basic mortality tables for level term life longevity projections.
- CMS & KFF (Kaiser Family Foundation): ACA Marketplace premium benchmarks and federal poverty line subsidy formulas.
- NAPHIA: North American Pet Health Insurance Association loss ratios and veterinary claims benchmarks.
